Events

The challenges we face are global — and we address them through industry-wide knowledge sharing and strategic action. SGA meetups, member gatherings and panels bring together industry experts, members, and key stakeholders to share best practices and align on priorities.

SGA Meetups

SGA meetups bring together experts from across the industry and beyond to exchange insights, share knowledge, and explore best practices in emission reduction, sustainability compliance, and effective sustainable communication.

To empower the entire industry to decarbonize and reduce compliance costs, we make recordings of our past meetups publicly available, supporting open access to knowledge and best practices.

Upcoming Meetups

Join us on Thursday, 29th of January at 1pm – 2pm CEST, online on zoom

for this interactive panel as SYBO and Wooga share insights into best practices and key learnings for impactful and transparent player communication across in-game experiences and social media channels. Hosted by SGA, the session invites open discussion, real-world examples, and practical takeaways on how to create meaningful, trustworthy content that resonates with players.

Give it up for our incredible panelists—thank you for sharing your insights and expertise! Simona Dailidonyte, Product Marketing Manager at Wooga, Galina Fedulova, Lead Product Marketing Manager at Wooga and Celia Zimmermann, Head of Player Experience at SYBO

Join us on Tuesday, 10th of February at 11am-12pm CET online on Zoom for a discussion on the findings of two research projects on the impact of AI on sustainability goals, aiming to equip developers with the knowledge that can help align the use of these technologies with sustainability.

First, Ben Abraham (SGA) will present a summary of key projections and expectations from the International Energy Agency’s 2025 “Energy and AI” report, to provide context for the AI buildout, before highlighting the latest and most accurate data sources that can be used for scoping the environmental costs associated with the use of AI training and inference. Attendees will leave with a clear hierarchy of AI model types, which can help guide towards more sustainable use of AI in game development.

We will then hear from Chloé Germaine (Manchester Metropolitan University), who will share headlines from a report on the use of AI in the games industry, part of the STRATEGIES Horizon Europe project. Chloé will make the case that a lack of visibility into the true environmental costs of AI is enabling greenwashing. She will argue that adoption decisions are being driven by hype and competitive pressure rather than evidence, risking wasted investment. We share the information developers need to make informed and responsible choices in AI use.

Game performance optimization is usually driven by player experience and cost efficiency, but the same strategies can also deliver significant environmental benefits. In this talk, Torbjörn Söderman, Technical Director at GOAL will present the “4P Strategy” – Performance, Player Experience, Profit, and Power – and show how a combined focus makes optimization a true win-win.

Torbjörn will walk through three concrete examples:

SENTEC, their studio’s  scalable networking engine, which dramatically reduces CPU demand per game server while improving latency tolerance and player experience.

Launcher strategy, which uses hardware detection to distribute high-end and low-end versions of the game, ensuring accessibility on modest devices without compromising visual fidelity for top-tier hardware.

GPU Throttling, a system that dynamically adjusts framerates based on temperature and load, reducing energy usage, heat, and noise while also lowering CO₂ emissions at scale.

Game Industry Experts Discuss Energy Efficiency and Player Experience

Ari Arnbjörnsson, Technical Developer Relations at Epic Games, Hauke Thießen, Technical Artist at DECK 13 Interactive GmbH and Jyrki Coertjens, Lead Technical Artist at Nitro Games will discuss Energy Efficiency and Player Experience.

Participants get an understanding, some guidelines and best practices on how they can optimize their games across all gaming platforms without compromising the quality of the player’s experience.

Extending the lifetime of players’ hardware, reducing their energy bills, extending battery life for your games on battery-powered devices, and making games available on more devices so more players can play it.
