Embedding Sustainability into Company Culture and Game Development

Introductory workshop 60 Min

This workshop explores how sustainability can be effectively integrated into a company’s culture, leadership, and everyday operations—demonstrating that environmental responsibility and business performance are not only compatible but mutually reinforcing.

Participants will learn how aligning sustainability with core business strategies can enhance efficiency, strengthen resilience, and contribute to long-term success. Through real-world case studies from industry leaders such as SYBO, Ubisoft, Rovio, and CD Projekt Red, the session illustrates practical approaches to embedding sustainability into organizational processes, empowering teams, and fostering a purpose-driven workplace.

The workshop highlights the interplay between sustainability and operational efficiency, including how developers can directly contribute to lowering a company’s environmental impact—particularly by improving energy efficiency without compromising the player experience.

By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with actionable strategies for integrating sustainability into business decision-making, team leadership, and game development. They will gain insights into how to build internal buy-in, lead more sustainably, and develop games that are both innovative and environmentally responsible.

Key questions addressed in the workshop
  • Sustainable Management & Leadership: How can leaders foster a culture of sustainability across teams and departments?
  • Technical Best Practices for Impact Reduction: How can developers reduce energy consumption without sacrificing quality or player engagement?
  • Best Practices from Industry Leaders: What can be learned from studios already implementing successful sustainability practices?

Sustainability and the games industry: Where do I start?

Introductory workshop 50 Min

This introductory workshop is designed for developers looking to understand the environmental challenges—and opportunities—facing the global games industry today. It begins by defining what sustainability means in the context of game development and publishing, then dives into the industry’s environmental footprint across the entire value chain.

Participants will explore who the key players are—from developers and publishers to hardware manufacturers and service providers—and how their decisions shape the industry’s impact. The session also introduces the fundamentals of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, provides an overview of current sustainability reporting practices, and includes hands-on exercises in value chain and impact mapping to put learning into practice.

By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to begin their sustainability journey and identify where meaningful change can start—within their own projects and across the wider industry.

Key questions addressed in the workshop
  • What does sustainability mean in the context of the games industry?
  • What is the current annual carbon footprint of the global games industry?
  • Where do most of the industry’s emissions originate today?
  • What roles do game developers, hardware manufacturers, and service providers play in shaping environmental outcomes?
  • And what practical actions can be taken to reduce the industry’s environmental impact?

Emissions and Reporting Scope 1 and 2: A Practical Workshop for Game Studios

Workshop 60 – 80 Min

This workshop offers actionable insights into how game studios can measure, understand, and report their Scope 1 and 2 emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. They will explore practical tools and ready-to-use templates—like the SGA Standard data input sheet—to kickstart their emissions tracking journey with confidence and clarity.

It is perfect for individuals or teams who might not have a sustainability background but want to take on these responsibilities, as well as any team members interested in understanding and measuring their game studio’s direct fossil fuel use and energy consumption.

As part of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to benchmark their studio’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions against those of the world’s leading studios.

Emissions and Reporting Scope 3: A Practical Workshop for Game Studios

Workshop 60 – 80 Min

This workshop provides game studios with practical guidance on how to identify, measure, and report Scope 3 emissions in alignment with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Scope 3 emissions—often the largest and most complex category—include all indirect emissions that occur throughout a product’s lifecycle, especially during use by players and in external services.

Participants will gain access to ready-to-use tools and templates tailored to the unique characteristics of different game business models and platforms, including mobile, console, and PC. The session focuses on helping studios not only understand their current emissions but also anticipate and reduce the environmental impact of games once they are launched and used by players.

By the end of this session, participants will have a clearer understanding of their indirect emissions, access to practical templates for data collection, and a roadmap for building more sustainable game development and distribution practices.

Key questions addressed in the workshop
  • Scope 3.11: What are the emissions associated with mobile, console, and PC end users, and how can studios calculate and reduce them?
  • Scope 3.9: How does downstream transport and digital distribution (e.g., downloads, cloud delivery) contribute to your footprint?
  • Scope 3.6: What is the impact of business travel, and how can it be managed effectively?
  • Scope 3.1: How do outsourced development, IT hardware, ad networks, and data center usage factor into your overall emissions profile?
  • What strategies and tools can studios use to build actionable Scope 3 reporting and reduction plans?
